Re: Compression questions about 1.5 & 9.5 HP Johnsons The 9.5 rope starter is geared to make pulling easier, so you can't get much speed to show a higher compression. You can get more speed with a rope on the flywheel, but no repeat strokes. If the rings and bores are perfect, you might get 90 PSI. 75# even compression is what I would consider very good for one of these. Many of them are high 60s to low 70s for compression. They are a low compression engine and it should run nicely with 75# on each cylinder.-Ben

Compression, check both cylinders, I would think you should have somewhere around 70-90 lbs and be within 10% of each other. 2, normally the engine is propped to the boat size to get the proper RPM at wide open .
The thing looks clean, runs decent but a compression test shows only 108/109 psi. The compression test was done with a rather new Snap On compression gauge. In the early 1970's, when you could still get good gasoline, outboard compression in the 180-190 psi range was common. If your 65 hp Johnson is running in the 100-150 psi range, this would be acceptable, and the engine should still perform well on todays fuel. Re: 1967 Johnson Low Compression it probably has never had a decarb, smoke could be carbon burning off. Decarb, take a can of seafoam put 3/4 of it in the gas tank, with only 1 gallon of premixed gas. put the rest in a spray bottle. start the engine, and let it come up to temperature. then remove plugs, and them some real good shot of seafoam into the cylinders, .
